Some of us have traveled the country on missions to assist the poor, the unhoused, the addicted. It’s often a calling from God that burns strong in one’s heart.
There is always someone out there who could use a bottle of water, a clean pair of socks, an ear to listen to their stories, a hug to let them know that they’re still human and loved.
When your collars have been soaked with the tears of people suffering from homelessness, addiction, loneliness, and abandonment, people who are in a constant state of shock and trauma, you will know just how badly you are needed in this world to help the less fortunate among us. It will touch your spirit and perhaps bring tears from you, too – knowing that you’re doing something with purpose and good; lifting up humanity and helping society’s most vulnerable.
To see each day people so broken in spirit, bodies battered from the ravages of substance misuse, physical assaults, and the hard life of living unhoused is challenging. But being there instills hope, hope for mankind and for those who desperately need it. And what greater reward can we receive than doing God’s work in a suffering world? We are blessed to be able to do so.
