Wasn’t the Best Day

Just returned from doing outreach. With the rain and all wasn’t the best day to be doing it. Seems on the days when the weather is at its worst our unhoused struggle the most. So, that’s why we go out, to help these poor souls.
Would be nice if we could report more joy when we do what we do. But frankly, it is pretty hard to find it, especially on days like today.
Met a nice young homeless man pushing a shopping cart in the large parking lot near the old Shaw’s Building on South Willow Street. He was soaked. We offered him an umbrella and a tent.
He said, “I can’t use the tent. Wherever I set it, it gets destroyed by the police.” He then pointed to the huge overhang/entrance to the vacant store front and said, “I was sleeping there last night trying to stay dry and warm and out of the cold rain and at 6 o’clock this morning the police came and made me move. I wasn’t hurting anyone.”

I’m so very sorry that this happened. My heart breaks for the homeless. I’ve been homeless a few times but just short time periods and ended up landing a new place fairly quickly. I’ve been at our current residence since late January but are already facing tough times because we just don’t make a lot of money and I’m on Social Security Disability. Both of our vehicles were repossessed and we had to borrow money to get an old used car for my husband to get back and forth to work. City of Manchester said that we didn’t spend our money on allowable expenses. We weren’t allowed to pay a down payment on a car and borrow the balance from a relative. We weren’t allowed to even register the car. So without either was my husband supposed to stop working and lose his job and our apartment? My Dad was homeless for almost my entire first 28 years of my life so how is that ok? With all of these empty buildings and warehouses why can’t affordable housing be had? Why can’t the city welfare office at least give opportunities to help those that are struggling? Making the homeless situation even worse is not the answer!
